We are narrowing our search on VW beetles. It is now a choice between a “tricked-out” restored metallic baby blue model (see right), with fancy alluminum rims and a new white interior; or one I’m about to test drive with less frills but that has an overhauled 1500cc super-beetle engine (better for the hills and reduced oxygen here).
We went for a second test drive of the fancy beetle this morning to show Katie.
The guy who is selling the second super-bug is an Italian-Ethiopian charactor named George Maffi who builds race cars for the off-road rally circut around Addis. He showed me one of the race cars a 4-by-4 Ford Escort that has a modified 4-cilinder engine that makes 287 horsepower! He then invited us to one of the races (probably really dusty!).
